Families Together

Reconnecting through the Power of Play

Overview of Families Together

Created in 1992 in collaboration with the RI Department of Children, Youth and Families and the RI Family Court, Families Together is an innovative visitation program that provides therapeutic visitation for court-separated families. For 33 remarkable years, this partnership has woven a strong support network for families in need, planting a seed of healing and hope. During a series of visits, families reconnect through the power of play and learn together under the supportive guidance of the Museum’s family therapists. The program continues to create success stories, proving that positive change can begin with a simple moment of play.

Why a museum?

Providence Children’s Museum serves as a welcoming sanctuary where families strengthen their connections through the natural power of play. Within these nurturing walls, every space offers opportunities for discovery – from splashing and experimenting with water, learning about pets or discovering how shapes come together, PCM encourages active play and communication between parents and children. In this supportive environment, mistakes become valuable learning moments, and successes are shared celebrations. The museum’s carefully crafted spaces allow for fluid exchanges between parent and child – at times the adult guides the exploration, while other moments see children leading the way with their natural curiosity. Together, they build lasting memories, sharing stories and knowledge while engaged in exhibits that naturally blend learning with enjoyment.

While this interplay of discovery enriches all families, it holds special significance for those working to rebuild connections. The museum’s intuitive, hands-on exhibits transcend barriers, creating an inclusive space for families of all backgrounds, abilities, and educational experiences. As families explore alongside other community members during regular museum hours, experienced therapists observe these authentic interactions, gaining valuable insights into family dynamics as they naturally unfold in a vibrant community setting.
